It may be a drop in the bucket when it comes to diluting a toxic drinking water tragedy, but this week OTCs in Action recognises dietary supplement manufacturer Nature Made (Pharmavite / Otsuka) for trying to help fight lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan.

A state of emergency has been declared in Flint, where residents have been exposed to dangerous lead-infested water as a result of government incompetence in sourcing the city’s supply. People are already suffering serious neurological and other health effects of lead poisoning, and the damage to their long-term wellbeing, as well as to future generations, cannot yet be measured.

That said, there is evidence that vitamin C and calcium reduce lead absorption in the body. Nature Made has joined forces with philanthropic group Feed the Children to supply Flint families with vitamin C and calcium supplements.

“At Nature Made, we operate from a foundation of values that is focused on people – both inside and outside of our company. We are dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of individuals worldwide,” said Amit Jain, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Pharmavite. “The opportunity to partner with Feed the Children to donate calcium and vitamin C to the community of Flint, Michigan was a natural decision.”
